Expert speakers on Sudan will give updates on the strife-torn country’s current situation at a diocesan link meeting next month.
Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Revd Nick Baines, Ludia Shukai, a Sudanese spokesperson living in Yorkshire and African church historian Revd Dr Kevin Ward will speak at the meeting on Monday, June 10 at 7.30pm at St George’s, Leeds.
“Sudan is going through huge and uncertain change at this very moment, as it seeks to free itself from a political dictatorship of over 30 years,” said Anne Russell, co-chair of our Sudan Link.
“The Episcopal Church of Sudan is one of the Diocese of Leeds' long-term links, and situation is the most economically, politically and religiously difficult of all our links.
"The meeting we are holding is looking straight at the stark challenge Christians are facing: what does freedom mean?” She said.
Ludia Shukai, is a leader among Sudanese people living in Yorkshire. A daughter of the late Bishop Butrus Shukai, she takes a special interest in the Bible Training Institute in Omdurman.
The Revd Dr Kevin Ward visited Sudan in 2018 with one of the Link’s encounter groups.
An expert in Africa studies and church history, he brings a wealth of knowledge to the interpreting of the life of the Church in Sudan.
Bishop Nick, recently visited Khartoum to address a conference on Freedom of Religion.
He spoke with politicians, religious leaders, police and military representatives, and had contact with civil rights people in the early stages of the protests that have brought about the downfall of President Bashir.
