Explore Lent through a comic book

Explore Lent through a specially-commissioned comic book and art activities

An artist who’s written and illustrated a Leeds-based comic book for Lent will be leading a retreat in the centre of Leeds on Saturday 18 March.

Commissioned by Leeds Church Institute, Si Smith’s comic “How to Disappear Completely” reflects on Christ’s 40 days in the wilderness as well as some of the realities of life and faith in modern-day Leeds.

Si says, “People local to Leeds will recognise some of the locations I’ve used, not least the derelict council offices on the way out of the city to the M621. All of the characters in the comic have been observed and drawn around Leeds.

“I’m reluctant to say too much about it because I quite like people to come to it and find what they think it’s about.

"I’ve put things in there that people can find, there’s hints to things, and there’s references to songs, so if you’ve got the patience, and the interest you can look at it and go, ‘oh yeah’".

Si Smith will lead the retreat day on 18 March at Leeds Church Institute from 10am to 5pm. Feel free to drop in at any time; led activities at 11am and 3pm. You can also register here.

Leeds Church Institute is opposite the Corn Exchange, above ‘Out of this World’ - 20 New Market Street, LS1 6DG.

"How to Disappear Completely, a comic for Leeds and for Lent" costs £5 per copy and is available from LCILeeds.org.
