She was only 23 years old when she lost her three-year-battle with bowel cancer, but the Brighouse primary school teacher so inspired her headteacher and his son that they are taking on a tough Coast to Coast cycling fundraising challenge in her name.
Graeme Genty, Headteacher at St Chads CE (VA) Primary School and his ten year old son James, a pupil at Middlestown Primary Academy in Wakefield will set off on the 170-mile Way of the Roses coast to coast ride on May 27th.
They are raising funds for Sinead’s Cancer Care, the charity Sinead Broadbent and her family set up before she died to support all those who had supported her: The Overgate Hospice, The Christie, Macmillan, The Laura Crane Trust, Teenage Cancer Trust, The Willow foundation and CLIC Sargent.
And to kickstart the fundraising, this Friday (May 12) both Graeme's school in Brighouse and James's school in Wakefield will hold a non-uniform day and cake and bake sale.
Said Graeme: “This is our first father and son cycling adventure which will be exciting and challenging; but it’s for a very worthy cause, and one which is close to our hearts.”

Both father and son are keen cyclists and are taking the most picturesque and safest route from Morecambe to Bridlington beginning on the first day with a gruelling 70 miles to cover and a great deal of climbing to be done, especially around the Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales National Park, finishing for the day in Pately Bridge. Day 2 is fairly flat as they head through the Vale of York, through Ripon and York itself finishing a shorter 50 mile day at Pocklington. The final day then sees a few more significant climbs over the final 50 miles as they head through Driffield and then on towards the East coast finally finishing at Bridlington.
Sinead Broadbent was a nursery and pimary school teacher in Brighouse. She died in Overgate Hospice earlier this year after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2014.
