A Wakefield church centre has teamed up with MakeLunch, the local rugby team, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Newlife Preschool Nursery, to run a free lunch kitchen from 15th– 26th August for children who rely on free school meals for their main meal of the day.
Not only will the children across Wakefield and the Five Towns get a tasty nutritious dinner, but a range of fun activities from gardening, pizza making, bug hunt, up-cycling, cupcakes and science fun.
St Catherine’s church and Church centre is the biggest food bank in the Wakefield area serving hundreds of vulnerable families every week.
Jonathan Williams, Project manager said: “Many families rely on these meals as their main, or in extreme cases, only meal of the day. When school stops for the holidays, so does the food.
“Many children also miss out on the free breakfast club, free milk, and free fruit and vegetables that they are also provided with at school. For parents it can be a struggle to find extra money to pay for food and many parents skip meals themselves in order to feed their children.
“We wanted to work together to try and fill that gap, “ he added.

MON 15TH - LITTLE GREENFINGERS (11.30am – 1.00pm)
Bring your little sprouts to our garden for a fun garden themed session. Decorate your own flowerpot, make a grass head to fill it, take it home and watch it grow!
TUES 16TH – FAMILY FUN DAY (11.00am – 2.00pm)
Enjoy music, crafts, face-painting, games, lots of fun and, of course, our bouncy castle!
WED 17TH - CREEPY CREATURES (11.30am – 1.00pm)
Bug hunt! Help us find the scariest, slimiest and creepiest bugs around. Are you brave enough to take part in our swamp dive?
THURS 18TH - TEDDY BEAR’S PICNIC (11.30am – 1.00pm)
Bring your favourite teddy bear along to join in the fun and games. There will be a range of teddy crafts and a story time. Prizes for the best teddy masks.
FRI 19TH - TREASURES FROM TRASH (11.30am – 1.00pm)
Fun upcycling craft session using common household items to create artworks and items to treasure. Prizes for the best artwork!
MON 22ND - PIZZA PARTY (11.30am – 1.00pm)
Join us for a taste of Italy! Make your own pizza and garlic bread before enjoying our quizzes, puzzles and prizes.
TUES 23RD – CUPCAKES & CRAFTS (11.30am – 1.00pm)
Get your pastry chef abilities flowing and create some cupcakes good enough to frame or really let’s be honest: EAT!
WED 24TH – WIGGLE & GIGGLE (11.30am – 1.00pm)
Get moving with our fun activity session. Limber up and stretch your way to fitness.
THURS 25TH – SCIENCE LAB (11.30am – 1.00pm)
A fun and exciting session – get involved in some slimy, fizzy and crazy science.
