The Revd Canon Nick Horton, who for 36 years served in the historic diocese of Ripon and Leeds has died aged 73.
Nick was ordained in 1968 and served his curacy in the Carlisle Diocese. He first came to the Diocese of Ripon in 1973 as Vicar of Hudswell with Downholme and Marske. He was rector of Middleton Tyas and Melsonby from 1975 until 1981 and Vicar of Wortley de Leeds from 1981 until 1993. He moved to become Vicar of Middleton in Leeds for five years and was Rural Dean of Armley during that time. In 1998 he was made Vicar of Kirby on the Moor (known as Kirby Hill and pictured right), Cundall with Norton le Clay, and Skelton with Newby where he ministered until his retirement in 2009.From 2001 to 2004 he was Area Dean of Ripon and in 2001 he was made an Honorary Canon of Ripon Cathedral.
Canon Horton retired to the Diocese of Hereford in 2009 where he had Permission to Officiate.
He leaves a wife Judith, daughter Clare and son Rob. The funeral service will be held at Leominster Priory at 2pm on Friday 7th July.
