Great Cleckheaton Bake-Off will cook up vital funds for refugees

The community group Cleckheaton Refugee Crisis Appeal are holding a Bake-Off on the 10th October to continue raising funds and collecting items to help the refugees fleeing to Europe.

Bags of donated items collected at Saturday's drop-in session

After the success of the Drop-in session on Saturday, where local residents came out in force to donate bags of useful items, it is hoped that the Bake-Off will do just as well in raising money so the group can transport the collected items to the refugees in need.

With possible entrants for the Bake-Off including a lemon drizzle cake, a chocolate cake, a carrot cake, a Dundee cake, a coconut and lime cake and some delicious cookies, it promises to provide a fabulous feast for all who come along!

As well as the baking contest, everyone will be treated to afternoon tea and a slice of the cakes being judged in the competition.

Revd Brunel James, Vicar of the Cleckheaton churches, says, “We are raising cash for the Save the Children Refugee Appeal, and collecting useful items which will go straight to refugees arriving in places like Calais and the Greek islands.

“The items collected are basically anything that would be useful when camping, and warm clothes.”Rebecca Fitzsimons, Juliette Evans, Roy Isherwood, Margaret Couch, Elaine Robinson, Ann Penfield, Dan Hoyle starting to sort donations at St John's Church, Cleckheaton

The Bake-Off will offer the opportunity for people to make cash donations to help transport the donated items to the refugees, and with all those working for the Crisis Appeal giving their time for free, everyone can be sure that 100% of donations will go towards providing aid for those in need.

The event will also act as another Drop-in session, enabling people to donate more useful items, such as hoodies, shoes, tents, candles, toiletries and non-perishable food.

The Bake-Off will take place between 1:30pm and 4pm at St John’s Church, Cleckheaton, but entrants to the contest must bring their creations to the church at 1pm.
