Grub on no Grant for Huddersfield students

Students taste samples from the Mother's Union recipe bookLast Friday Mothers’ Union took part in a Ready Steady Cook Event arranged by Huddersfield University Student’s Union Advice Centre – all to promote good cooking on a tight budget as part of National Student Money Week.

Five members from Brighouse and Huddersfield went along to promote the local Mothers’ Union’s very own recipe book - Grub on no Grant - as well as to give away tasters of just some of the cheap and easy to prepare dishes from the book.

A Game Show challenged students to prepare two of the dishes from the book. Chicken Curry and Cauliflower Cheese.  Two female students prepared Cauliflower Cheese and two male students Chicken Curry as Mother’s Union members in the audience shouted advice.

One of the contestantsCurry may be the nation’s favourite dish, but it seems too much oil made one of the curries lose out.

The Mothers’ Union recipe book ‘Grub on no Grant’ has been given out free at the annual Freshers’ Fayre at Huddersfield University for several years now. A thousand copies were given away last year alone.

Ready Steady Cook"We’ve had to rewrite and adapt the book over the years," explained Andrea Green from the Honley branch.

“Students often don’t have ovens now, so we’ve had to make recipes work on a hob or microwave.”

“It was an exhausting day, but great fun to be with the students.”
