Happy Birthday transformed St Catherine\'s Community Cafe

An award winning church and community project is celebrating its 20th birthday with a makeover.

Large renovations, a new menu and a new name will transform the community café at St Catherine’s church in Sandal and Agbrigg into Nourishment.

The transformed café which will offer exiciting new dishes, healthy salads, low fat meals and vegetarian and gluten free options alongside its more traditional home made cakes and puddings,  is named after the café’s latest community project, Nourishment which won them first prize in the Tesco Bags of Help competition earlier this year with almost 10,000 votes in seven days.

Nourishment will provide the chance for people suffering from depression to redevelop a disused community garden next to the church on Doncaster Road, grow produce and learn how to make creams, ointments and teas for sale in the district. All proceeds will go towards equipping people with skills for work.

The 140 year old church, which was named Wakefield’s Charity of the Year 2015, will hold a special event to celebrate the launch of their newly renamed café at lunchtime on Moonday June 6 with guests including the Bishop of Wakefield, Bishop Tony, the Mayor and Mayoress of Wakefield, local councillors,  Olivia Rowley and Monica Graham, their local Police Community Officers, representatives from the NHS, AHS, Wakefield Hospice and Rethink Mental Illness and Sarah Cutts from Christians Against Poverty.

Jonathan Williams, Project Coordinator said “The whole idea behind Nourishment is not only to give people nourishing food but also the nourishment of a safe place where they can belong to a caring community.  The word sums up everything we are trying to achieve in our Emergency Food Bank, Elderly Day Care Centre, outreach projects for people suffering from mental illness and our community cafe as well.”
