St Catherine’s Church has been shortlisted for a Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ Award out of over 5,000 applicants nationwide. Funded by the new 5p levy on carrier bags, members of the public will now decide if the award-winning charity on Doncaster Road will receive a prize of up to £12,000 to start a new project.
Nourishment will provide the chance for people suffering from depression to redevelop a disused community garden, grow produce and learn how to make creams, ointments and teas for sale in the district. All proceeds will go towards equipping people with skills for work.
Project Coordinator Jonathan Williams said “Our service users and patients from Fieldhead Hospital will be able to learn tangible skills on their return to wellbeing. The entire aim of Nourishment is to provide the long-term stability and skills – social and emotional– that individuals need to make a recovery.”
In addition to providing over 40,000 meals to people in desperate need over the last twelve months, St Catherine’s offers hot lunches for the homeless, referrals for debt advice, an Elderly Day Care Centre and West Yorkshire’s first Recovery Café for sufferers of mental illness. In 2015 the charity won the Wakefield Express Community Enterprise Award for all its work across the city.
Lisa Grant, Centre Manager said “At our Emergency Food Bank in particular we encounter mental suffering every single day and so we would really appreciate the help of the public to get Nourishment off the ground. Anyone can vote for us in a local Tesco store between February 27 and March 6.”
