On October 28th 2018 Holy Trinity Huddersfield will begin a year of celebrations to mark the 200 years since it was first opened for worship. Floodlights illuminating the church tower will be switched on at a special event to begin the year, all focused on the theme of light.
“Holy Trinity’s church tower is a distinctive landmark on the Huddersfield skyline. We wanted to light it up as a way of proclaiming to all who see it that Christ is the ‘Light of the World’,” said churchwarden, Andy Barber. The tower which can be seen from right across the town is over 100 feet tall.
Holy Trinity was built by Benjamin Haigh Allen of nearby Greenhead Hall. He believed that Huddersfield needed a second church to serve the quickly growing population of the town and had Holy Trinity built at his own expense, costing him £16,000. When it was built, Holy Trinity was on the edge of the town. Now its parish serves the communities of Springwood, Edgerton, Highfields and Edgerton and its growing congregation gather from right across the town and beyond.
On October 28th the year of celebrations begin with a children’s light party at 3.30pm of fun, games, craft and food for primary school aged children. The party is free and open to all children, tickets can be booked on Eventbrite via the church’s Facebook page
Following the party the floodlights will be switched on at an event open to all. Hot chocolate and sweet treats will be served and everyone is invited to hear how Christ has been proclaimed as the ‘Light of Life’ at Holy Trinity for the past 200 years.
