Huddersfield school achieves hat-trick of awards

A hat trick of awards has been achieved over the last year by one of our Huddersfield schools.

St Aidan’s CE Academy in Skelmanthorpe has been awarded the National Nurturing School Award, the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award and the Primary Science Quality Mark.

St Aidan’s CE Academy is a Church of England Academy, catering for children in the age range 4–10 years old.

The school is organised into six classes and is part of the Learning Accord Multi Academy Trust.

The National Nurturing Schools Programme is a whole school approach to develop and embed a nurturing culture.

It supports quality first teaching and learning, promotes healthy outcomes for children and young people, focusing on emotional needs and development alongside academic learning in a whole-school environment.

There are currently only 70 schools nationally who hold this prestigious award.

Mrs Laura Willimott, Headteacher at St Aidan’s CE Academy, said: “The school’s long-standing commitment to nurture has rightfully earned it this prestigious award.

“The Nurturing School Award is a great chance for school to demonstrate the important work we do to enrich the lives of our children and enable them to achieve success in the world.

“This is something our entire staff believe in, and we all pull in the same direction to achieve it!’’

The school received further awards this spring when it secured both the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award and the Primary Science Quality Mark.

Class teacher Sally Sommerville played an instrumental role in achieving them; both through her role as science coordinator and her own passion for outdoor learning and the environment.

Schools that have achieved a Primary Science Quality Mark have demonstrated a significant commitment to science teaching and learning.

The Eco-Schools Green Flag award was achieved when pupils followed the Seven Step Framework outlined by Eco-Schools, which has been designed as a simple environmental management system that empowers young people to introduce and lead environmental actions and education in their school.
