Tackling big issues through drama and art
Almost 150 school children got messy in Wakefield Cathedral – learning about community cohesion.
Six artists used a range of skills from drumming to drama to help the Year 3 pupils to think about big issues of building bridges, forming friendships, their place in society, hopes and dreams, and individuality.
The workshops used the architecture of the Grade 1 Listed building – including the labyrinth - to inspire the children – pupils from St. John’s and St Mary’s in Wakefield, St Paul’s, Alverthorpe and St Peter’s, Stanley.
The Community Cohesion Day is the latest schools package from the Cathedral’s Education and Heritage team called: ‘Theme Days for Schools’.
Six different artists provided six workshops: drumming, paper-craft sculpture, singing, light photography, drama and vertical books and helped the children better understand the core values of community cohesion through shared performance and art.
Tracey Yates, community learning manager at Wakefield Cathedral said: “ It was the first time we’d done this package, and it was great to see the kids have such fun without realizing they were getting to grips with such important themes.”
