Leeds Minster holds vigil in response to Manchester terror attack

Bishop Nick and the Rector of Leeds, Canon Sam Corley, led a vigil on Tuesday evening in Leeds Minster in reponse to the attack on Monday night in Manchester.

In attendance were many representatives of the major faiths, along with civic leaders including the Lord Mayor of Leeds, the CEO and Leader of Leeds City Council (Tom Riordan & Judith Blake), Hilary Benn MP, Greg Mulholland MP, the Police & Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire and the Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire.

During a 30 minute service that, as well as prayer and readings, allowed lots of space for reflection, Sam Corley said, "In some ways it is too early for words, but this vigil offers space and silence to try and find a shape for our many thoughts and emotions.

"We come to share our grief and to comfort one another; to find strength and to foster resilience; and to affirm that, even in darkness, the light of faith and the flame of hope burns strong."

Bishop Nick said, "God doesn't absent himself from the pain of the world, and those who bear his name must do the same. The message of Easter is that we should be drawn by hope and not driven by fear.

"The desire of terror is to terrorise. The resistance to terrorism is to refuse to be terrified.

"Let us bear in our hearts those who are bereaved, those who are still in a state of not knowing, and those whose lives have been irrevocably turned upside down or destroyed".

At the end Sam Corley lit the Easter candle. He said, "This candle says that death and violence and destruction do not have the last word."
