Emmanuel cafe church, the Sunday worship community at Leeds University's Anglican chaplaincy, are creating a 'sculpture for peace' as part of the city wide Light Night event on Friday 7 October - one of 13 events taking place at the university.
Chaplain, the Revd Matt Ward, says "We're inviting people to come and fold a paper crane which will then be added to the flock of cranes suspended in our amazing chaplaincy space. By the end of the evening we hope to have 1000 cranes winging their way as a prayer for peace.
"To be made in the image of God is to be creative, so doing something for Light Night is all about celebrating and having fun with that. It's also a great opportunity for the chaplaincy to meet with lots of people who might not normally come to visit us, and for us to get them thinking about spirituality and faith in a friendly and engaging way. I hope that while people fold paper cranes they'll reflect on what peace really is and we'll have opportunities to chat with them as they do.
"Getting involved in events like this is great for the chaplaincy. Often people think we're only there to give pastoral support to people who're having a hard time; of course we do that, but we also spend lots of our time trying to help build community as well as encouraging people to explore spirituality. Being visible as we do that can also make it easier for people to approach us if they are looking for support."
Join us to help create a beautiful illuminated peace sculpture and to reflect on what peace means to you. Make an origami crane, a traditional symbol of peace, accompanied by some live acoustic music. Each crane will be incorporated into an illuminated sculpture suspended above our unique glass floor.
