'Make everyone's life FAIR!' was the caption on one of the winning posters for the Think Chocolate! Fairtrade Poster competition.
Charlotte Rutter, age 11 from Croft CE Primary School, just south of Darlington won first prize in the Pre-School and Primary Section using a computer to design her poster emphasising that buying Fairtrade chocolate helps farmers send their children to school, and everyone’s life FAIR!
Over 1500 entries were sent to the Fairtrade Competition from across the length and breadth of the diocese
Sophie Armitage, age 13 from the youth group at St John's Church Ben Rhydding won first prize in the Secondary Section with a decorative poster enticing us to eat Fairtrade chocolate.
Sophie is pictured right with her prize and Peter Willox, Vicar of Ben Rhydding drinking a cup of Ethiopian Sidamo Fairtrade ground coffee.
Cat Chadwick won first prize in the Adult Section.
Revd Tina Walker, Fairtrade West Yorkshire & The Dales, who presented the prize to Cat at St Thomas' Church, Batley last Sunday said:
"Cat's poster had all the elements the panel of judges were looking for - a colourful, attractive image that makes people want to look closer and a short and snazzy message with layers of meaning.
New Life: Good Life – the caption on Cat’s poster - celebrates both the joy of helping others overseas through our Christian living as well as the much deeper meaning of the Easter Story.”
Cat said winning the competition was a lovely surprise:
"I can't believe it! I don't think I've ever won anything like this before in my life!"
All the winners were presented with a fairtrade chocolate Easter egg and a certificate signed by Bishop Nick.
The judges commented
"It was hard for the panel to choose the winners. Choosing from over 1,500 fabulous entries was hard. People used everything from paint, print and collage to mosaic, chalks and computers.“
