Minimalist nativity at Wakefield Cathedral

Wakefield Cathedral welcomed a minimalist nativity display into its nave this week – as building work means they have no room at the inn.

The two paper sculptures depicting Mary carrying baby Jesus and Joseph were created by Sheila Wing, a paper sculptress and a member of the Cathedral Chapter.

The Dean of Wakefield, the Very Revd Jonathan Greener said: “I love the simplicity of these figures. They reflect the austerity many of us feel at this time – and for us – with building work going on in the East End for Project 2015 – we literally have no room at the inn for a full nativity scene this year.”

The Cathedral has lost some of its services this year – as work continues to transform the East End of the nave. But the programme includes a Rock Mass this Saturday (Dec 12), carols by candlelight (Dec 18) and the Film Club is showing It’s a Wonderful Life on Dec 19th st 6pm.
