More In Common fun day in memory of MP Jo Cox

Batley will host one of a series of free community events held across the country in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox on September 3.The free event is organised by the More in Common group - formed after the Batley and Spen MP’s murder and includes some of her colleagues, local community groups and individuals determined to honour her memory. The event will include Batley Community Choir performing The Rose, their charity tribute single for Jo.

The fun day is free and will take place at Batley High School from 12-5pm

on Saturday, 3 September  with various sporting activities including a football tournament, hockey, circus skills, a climbing wall and assault course, archery, and cricket, stalls and other community activities.

It is one of a number of More In Common fun days organised across the country – including one in Leeds city centre on the same day – which aims to celebrate our diversity as communities and takes its inspiration from Jo Cox’s maiden speech in the House: "we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us"

Jo Cox died after being shot and stabbed on the streets near her constituency office in Birstall on June 16.

The More in Common events are part of a number of plans being made with the support of Hope Not Hate, one of the three causes supported by the Jo Cox Fund, set up by friends and family after her death to celebrate and strengthen our communities.

Jo Cox’s sister, Kim Leadbeater said: “Jo dearly loved the people of Batley and Spen, and so we’re planning a day of fun for the whole community to enjoy. It will be a day of celebration, and I know it will be a day she would have enjoyed.”

A free shuttle bus is being planned from various locations around the Batley and Spen constituency
