Mothers’ Union will be campaigning to end domestic abuse as part of their Global Day this year.
The Mothers’ Union Global Day on Saturday, December 5 will be looking to call attention to the fact that worldwide one in three women have experienced some form of domestic abuse.
Mothers’ Union, as a leading women led organisation, believe this to be unacceptable.
The organisation works across the world to build resilience, challenge prejudice and advocate change through projects to build a better future for families.
Across the UK, Mothers’ Union groups have lobbied MPs and Bishops in support of the Domestic Abuse Bill which is currently going through Parliament.
In the Diocese of Leeds members support those in hospitals, prisons, and women’s refuges, while also offering a break to families in need using the Away from it All holiday scheme, which allows families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to have a holiday.
To mark Global Day there will be an online service, recorded at Wakefield Cathedral, which can be viewed on YouTube or the Wakefield Cathedral Facebook page.
Jean Thurman, President of the Mothers’ Union in the diocese, said: “At an online service for members this week we heard from a retired health visitor about her experience over many years of witnessing the effects of Domestic Violence on women and children.
“This has become a greater problem during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Mothers’ Union in the Leeds Diocese works to support Women’s refuges and agencies who provide for deprived families across the whole area, and also offer AFIA (Away From It All) holidays for such families in need of a break.
“We pray and campaign for more awareness of Gender Violence and Domestic Abuse.”
