New headstone for Huddersfield\'s famous son

A restoration project to remember one of Huddersfield's famous sons was unveiled thanks to the local Civic Society.

Edward Hughes was a Victorian architect, who was a pupil under George Gilbert Scott. He designed the Ramsden Building now part of Huddersfield University, the old Market Hall (now demolished) and a number of school buildings and last weekend he was remembered and honoured with a new headstone at his grave in the churchyard at Shepley.

The restoration was initiated by Chris Marsden of the Huddersfield Civic Society in conjunction with Malcolm Walker of the Huddersfield Society of Architects.

They are both in the picture as are Kirkburton Parish Councillors, as the Parish Council provided funding.  The stonemason, Bradley Farquharson of Wright and Son is in the foreground.

Vicar, the Revd Canon Joyce Jones said: "It is exciting to discover this important link to Huddersfield's heritage here in the churchyard at Shepley, and to learn about Edward Hughes who contributed so much to the visual appearance of Huddersfield."
