New Mother’s Union Branch including Zimbabwean members at St Peter’s Huddersfield

New Mothers'Union branch at St Peter's HuddersfieldA new branch of the Mothers’ Union began at St Peter’s, Huddersfield last Sunday as eleven women were admitted to membership and the Vicar, Canon Simon Moor renewed his membership.

The idea for the group came out of conversation with Zimbabwean members of the parish church who were already meeting sometimes for prayer and study. The hope is that the new group will be a way for them to be more involved in the wider church and St Peter’s as well as provide an opportunity for others to get to know them better. Prayer, learning and friendship are very much at the heart of what the Mother’s Union is about.

Among those who were admitted to membership by Diocesan President, Jean Thurman at the family Eucharist last Sunday was Revd Janet Sargent, Assistant Priest at St Peter’s. Elaine Swinhoe, local Huddersfield Area President was also there to support the group. Others have been attracted to join the Mothers’ Union group seeing it as a growth area for St Peter’s – building on their Lent focus of prayer and action which closely mirrors  the themes of prayer, enabling and campaigning within Mother’s Union.

Meet God during LentFor the last few years, St Peter’s has provided innovative resources during Lent to help people ‘Meet God during Lent 2016’ with a range of different styles and ideas encouraging prayer and action. More here. The new Mothers’ Union Group is partly an outworking of that vision for people to grow individually and as a church.

Revd Canon Simon Moor, Vicar of  St Peter’s commented;

“There was a Mothers’ Union Group at St Peter’s which closed a number of years ago. This new branch is a new beginning in the life of the parish, building on things that were already happening and including  a wider group at St Peter’s. It has re-emerged fulfilling a need for prayer and study both in a church and home setting.

“I know that the prayer and action of Mothers’ Union will contribute greatly to the growth of our town centre community.”
