Despite the current lockdown, churches across the Diocese have been generously raising money for Christian Aid Week 2020.
Taking place in the middle of May this year, Christian Aid Week is an annual intiative, bringing communities together in action and prayer to stand in solidarity with the world’s most vulnerable people.
The coronavirus pandemic has meant churches have had to think of new and innovative ways to contribute to the campaign digitally.
The Revd Andrew Pearson (pictured above), priest in charge at the Venerable Bede Church and a regular supporter of the charity, decided to shave his hair live on Facebook. Hundreds tuned in to the home made salon, previously used as a kitchen, with over £1000 raised through the use of an online Just Giving page and cheques sent through the post.
The parishes of Kirby Hill, Skelton cum Newby and Cundall with Norton Le Clay hosted an online quiz and also left Christian Aid envelopes for people to pick up on their daily walks. These were then returned to the vicarage. In total the community donated a wonderful £1013, way above anyone's expectations.
“How wonderful that adversity is producing such love and concern for others,” said the Revd Alison Askew, vicar of Kirby Hill, Skelton cum Newby and Cundall with Norton Le Clay.
“Originally we had lots of other activities planned such as a sponsored walk, cream tea and door to door collections.”
“In light of the pandemic we had to quickly adapt and everyone responded brilliantly.”
