Open the Book schools project celebrates its tenth anniversary
This June, Otley Christian Resources Hub will be celebrating ten years of ‘Open the Book’, a project telling Bible stories in Primary school assemblies.
To celebrate, author and story-teller, Bob Hartman (right) will be visiting several local schools and telling stories, as well as holding two evenings - at Yeadon and Wetherby.
Over the past ten years, ‘The Lion Storyteller Bible’ by Bob Hartman is the book which has been in most use by a teams from churches in the Otley area who regularly visit schools to ‘Open the Book’ in school assemblies.
Anne Cayton, from the Otley Christian Resources Hub, said, “Teams from all 11 of the parishes in the old Otley Deanery regularly visit their local school, and use props and costumes to tell stories in assemblies. All the resources have been made by a props team from across the area, and the project has been a great way of different churches working together.”
From small beginnings the project has grown to involve over eighty storytellers, going into seventeen local schools. “That means about 2500 children are hearing God’s story on a regular basis!” says Anne.
For those wanting to find out more, the two evening events with Bob Hartman will be held on Tuesday 16th June, 7.30pm, at St John’s Yeadon or on Thursday June 18 at St James’ Wetherby. The evenings will include some celebration of 10 years, as well as being appropriate for those thinking about beginning ‘Open the Book’. Bob Hartman will be talking about the ‘why’ and’ how’ of telling God’s story as well as performing some of his stories.
