Picturesque Barnsley village gets fundraising for its church

A picturesque Barnsley village has got its fundraising cap on to raise much needed funds for its village church.

Over the next two months Cawthorne will hold two major events to raise the estimated £20,000 plus needed to undertake major work to the church floor of All Saints Parish Church.

The first event will see the Manchester Chorale perform a concert of choral music in the church in Cawthorne on Saturday, 20th May at 7:30pm.

The concert, entitled ‘The Earthly Rose’, will have a floral theme to link in with the second big fundraiser and regular bi annual event for the village, Cawthorne’s ‘Open Gardens’ event later in June.

The music from amongst others, Britten, Mealor, Whitacre and Esenvald will reflect on roses, lilies, broom and primroses.

The choir was last in Cawthorne in 2014, pictured here, when it provided an evening of A cappella music. Chairman of Cawthorne Parish Council, John Walker, said: “All who came and enjoyed the wonderful concert wanted to know when the choir would be coming to Cawthorne again to sing in the church and said those who didn't attend missed a most memorable evening.”

"We hope this year’s concert promises to be another success in raising funds for the Parish Church," he added.

The Manchester Chorale is a mixed-voice choir of around 55 singers, based in Manchester, under the direction of Jill Henderson-Wild, who spent her childhood in the village and still has close ties to it. Her father, also a choral conductor, brought his international touring choir Sine Nomine to give an annual concert for many years and her mother was at the heart of village life for over 45 years.
