Pilot scheme to create ‘vacancy bank’ of priests for parishes without a vicar
A pilot scheme is being rolled out across the diocese to give parishes in a vacancy and without a vicar more consistent clergy cover until a new appointment is made.
Self- supporting ministers (SSMs) are being invited to be part of a ‘Diocesan Vacancy Bank’ so that parishes which find themselves with an unexpected vacancy can have more continuous clergy help and support.
Under the scheme, SSMs who want to take part would be the first port of call during a vacancy, and would be offered training in running a parish.
A letter of invitation has been sent to all SSMs which outlines the circumstances when a parish might need to draw on the Diocesan vacancy bank: ‘It may be appropriate for a number of reasons including, but not restricted to, unexpected departure of incumbent, ongoing issues of a complex nature in the parish or a depleted Church Wardens situation.’
Tony Collins the Diocesan SSM Officer said training would initially be offered to SSMs who have completed a curacy, and the pilot was already generating good levels of interest. “So far sixteen SSMs have asked to be included in these plans,” he said. “I would encourage all SSMs to consider this process and to contact me if interested.”
Bishop Nick has endorsed the scheme and said, “This is a very good idea, which, as well as offering continuity of care for parishes during an interregnum, will broaden the experience of the SSMs involved."
