Churches, mosques, temples and synagogues across Bradford will be holding pop-up events this September as part of a new project run by the World Curry Festival 2016. Faith in Food events will see people coming together to share a meal in the surrounds of a beautiful place of worship.
“Food is traditionally used by all cultures and religions as a way of bringing people together,” explains Reverend Alistair Helm, from St Paul’s Church, Manningham, “and a wonderful opportunity to experience new foods, as well as learn about the important role food plays in religious festivities.”
St Paul’s Church is hosting a Faith in Food event on Tuesday 20 September. Activities on the day include a competition to find the most original, creative and tastiest ‘samosa chaat’ recipe around.
While each Faith in Food event will have its own identity, serving food associated with the individual place of worship, the overall aim is for people from different communities to meet, eat and have fun.
“The World Curry Festival is all about bringing people together in celebration of their love of food, culture and entertainment,” says festival founder, Zulfi Karim. “Faith in Food offers people the chance to enjoy Israeli cuisine at Bradford Reform Synagogue, join friends for lunch at the Sikh temple on Leeds Road, or sample authentic Gujarati cuisine at the largest Hindu temple in the North. These are just some of the fabulous open days to get involved in.”
