Hundreds of handcrafted poppies have been sent in to Wakefield Cathedral in response to their request to create a field of poppies on the south door entrance for Remembrance Day.
Many others have helped to add the knitted, crocheted and crafted poppies to Hessian cloth at the Cathedral.
Tracey Yates, Wakefield Cathedral’s Community Learning Manager, says,
“Massive thanks to everyone who has helped with our Poppy Project – since our appeal we have received almost two bin bags full.
“And there is still time to get your poppies in to help us cover the Cathedral steps. Please drop them off at the Cathedral by Sunday 8 November,” she added.
If you still have poppies to send in, drop them into the Cathedral or send them to Poppies, Wakefield Cathedral, Cathedral Centre, 8-10 Westmoreland Street, Wakefield, WF1 1PJ before Sunday 8 November.
The project to recreate a field of poppies on the Cathedral steps in time for Remembrance was inspired by the poppies on display around the Tower of London last year and the famous First World War poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’. Pictured below is part of the Tower London installation on its northern tour, currently at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, between Wakefield and Barnsley.
The field of poppies will form part of the Act of Remembrance at Wakefield Cathedral which will take place at 11am on Wednesday 11 November on the steps to the south of Wakefield Cathedral.
Some time after the service there will be an opportunity to take a poppy from the carpet and make a donation to the Royal British Legion.
Any poppies remaining will be displayed in the Cathedral for a few days afterwards.
