PRAYER VIGILS HELD THIS WEEK
Prayer vigils have been held in Wakefield and Halifax this week to demonstrate solidarity against gender violence.
November 25 marked the start of the international campaign, 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, and Mothers’ Union branches in the Huddersfield and Wakefield Episcopal Areas have lent their voices to those of churches, organisations and individual campaigners calling for an end to gender specific violence against women and girls.
On Monday – the day before the 16 days started - Mothers’ Union hosted a time of prayer in St Mark’s chapel in Wakefield Cathedral which included a Eucharist service at 12.30pm.
And on Friday (28) they have organised a second vigil in Halifax Minster from 10 – 2pm with communion at 12.30pm.
Last year, 841 organisations from 11 countries took part in 16 Days of Activism, and there were a further 32 international and 20 online contributions for participants.
Eileen Warburton, vice president of the Pontefract Archdeaconery said: “Mothers' Union is once again getting involved in a global movement and joining those voices which are speaking out against gender based violence.
“Prayer is at the heart of our organisation so hosting a Vigil is a positive way of showing solidarity against such violence,” she added.
