Combining modern technology, in the form of QR codes, with the ancient practice of pilgrimage, the team at St John's, Ingrow found an innovative way to enable people to honour the sacrifices of armed service personnel during Remembrance this year.
A series of markers created a journey through the churchyard, with a QR code on each marker which when scanned took the visitor to a hymn, poem, or to an article of historic information.
Visitors have remarked on how this has helped them to reflect and pray as they have made their way through the grounds.
Young people who live nearby used one of the codes to see if people on the street where they live had served in the First World War.
The Revd Tracey Raistrick, Priest in Charge at St John’s, said: "As a parish in receipt of SDF funding, we are looking for new and creative ways to help the community reconnect with the church and grounds which hold a huge amount of shared history and memory.
“We are very grateful to local residents for their fantastic support with recent efforts to make the site safer and more attractive for the many people who pass through the churchyard each day.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, we're looking for ways to help people to pray and reflect in safe ways, such as during their daily exercise.
“The Remembrance Trail is the first of a series of journeys planned for the site over the coming months.”
