Ripon Cathedral carols to be broadcast live via Periscope internet app

Ripon Cathedral will be breaking new grounds tomorrow evening (Wednesday December 23rd) when its service of  Nine Lessons and Carols service at 5.30pm is streamed live to a potentially global audience via the Periscope app.

The Cathedral is one of four churches chosen to tell the Christmas story from December 23 in this way, illustrating the broad range of Anglican worship.

It is part of the Church of England’s new media project, @churchlive, which began in October with  a different church broadcasting  a live weekly service to a global audience .  People can access the services by logging on to the internet via the Periscope app on their mobile phone or tablet.

Dean John said:” The cathedral’s online presence has grown enormously over the past few years and it is very exciting to be involved in the Church of England’s latest social media project. While it is lovely that people can join us in the cathedral itself, this is not possible for some people owing to illness or distance. It is brilliant that at this special time of the year, no matter where people live, they can share in our worship.”

Tallie Proud, Digital Officer for The Archbishops’ Council of the Church of England, said:” It could be that someone is too ill to attend, or they are would like to attend but are on holiday or perhaps they would like to know what the church is like before they step into the building  for the first time.”
