All Saint’s Church, Roberttown, has been in full swing recently, using music concerts to raise money for the renovations that its roof desperately needs.
Most recently, on 4th July, Dewsbury Music Centre Swing Band performed in the church for the cause, making it the first time that the band has played in the building.
Revd Stephen Rochell claims, “I have a long association with Dewsbury Music Centre Swing Band [12 years], both playing piano and singing so it was an obvious idea to ask them to put on a concert.”
Joined by Heckmondwike Grammar School Soul Band, the concert raised £500 towards the roof’s renovation.
Work on the building was due to start last Easter but had to be postponed as a result of the costs, which were estimated to be much higher than originally expected.
Earlier this year, the local community pop choir led by Revd Rochell also held a summer concert over two nights for the cause and managed to raise a staggering £650.
The group meets once a week and just sing for fun, which attracted a large audience of enthusiastic friends, family and members of the congregation to the event.
Revd Rochell mentions, “It really was a very happy community event.
“The choir is made up of church members and people from the wider community and it really is a great way of reaching out and drawing in.
“It is open to anyone the only requirement being that they have a sense of fun.
“If anyone wants to know more they can find details on our Facebook page.”
Revd Rochell claims, “We are already planning a Proms Concert for next summer hopefully with one of the music centre ensembles, together with an autumn concert for Upper Hopton Church and our Christmas concert at Roberttown.
“Looks like a full musical calendar for Roberttown!”
