Royal approval for church centre

A Wakefield church centre has been given the royal approval after being awarded The Duke of York's Community Award Initiative.

Royal representatives visited St Catherines Church Centre on Doncaster Road last month to see first hand its wide reaching work with the homeless, mentally ill and the vulnerable and isolated.

And last week they learned they had been successful – one of 42 charitable organisations to receive the prestigious award across Yorkshire.

Centre Manager, Lisa Grant said: “We are delighted to receive this award.

"Whilst most people know us as a foodbank, we also run a variety of activities every week which help to support some of the most vulnerable people in the community including the elderly, young children and those suffering from mental ill-health.

“This award is a great achievement for us, and will mean that the Church Centre will be able to access training, support and additional funding to enable it to continue to deliver and develop the services it provides here in Wakefield.”

Representatives from St Catherine’s will be invited to meet HRH the Duke of York at a prestigious award ceremony in London in early summer.
