SLUM SURVIVORS
Young people from a church in South Ossett, Wakefield spent the weekend learning how to survive as homeless or refugees.
The first thing the twelve young people aged from 12 to 17 had to do, was build their own shelters from odd bits of wood, pallets and tarpaulin before a soup kitchen turned up and they could eat their evening meal.
The following day they joined the Men Behaving Dadly group in church to beg bacon sandwiches before being given an emergency food parcel and working out how to cook a decent meal with limited facilities.
It is the third time South Ossett church has run the Slum Survivor weekend for young people which attempts to highlight the plight of those less fortunate both at home and abroad.
Former youth leader at the church who helped organise the event, Adrian Smith, said: “We just want them to think about what it’s like if this is all you’ve got.
"It's about giving them some insight into the issues surrounding living in poverty in the UK. We will be eating basic food and doing activities based on the themes of slum living, refugees and homelessness."
Over the weekend, there were talks about homelessness and refugees, a quiz about how to survive on the moon and how you might best work as a team, a treasure hunt round the town and a talent contest using only the available materials for musical instruments.
And on Sunday the group joined in worship in church and after church managed to raise £120 for homelessness. They have set up a justgiving page - you can give here:
Hi we have a justgiving page now if anyone wants to add to the £120 we collected in our bucket on Sunday- can you add this to the article please
