Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge is putting the cross at the centre of Easter this year by hosting a Festival of Crosses.
Christ Church CE (VA) Junior School took the lead inviting local primary schools to get creative with the symbol of the cross but all four church schools in Sowerby Bridge have contributed their time and talent.
School governor Joan Lightowler and School Business Manager Anthea Gee helped display the exhibition in church so that everyone can see the talent of our young artists. Children from each of the four year groups at Christ Church produced colourful collages with stencilled crosses, and took photographs to make a striking montage.
Norland CE (VC) J&I school pupils produced individual crosses, and Sacred Heart Catholic Primary school used wool to knit small squares to make up their cross.
Mrs Gee explained “Each square represents a sheep and together they make up a flock, following Jesus.”
The centrepiece of Sowerby Village CE (VC) Primary school’s display was a cross formed from individual coloured handprints.
Christ Church’s vicar, Rev Canon Angela Dick said “Christians remember the wooden cross as the place where Jesus died on Good Friday. We wanted to celebrate that Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday with vibrant, decorative crosses.”
The displays can be seen on Tuesday 7 April from 10 - 11.15am.
Everyone is welcome to drop in and see the crosses.
There are activities for adults and children and refreshments too.
