Special tapestry unveiled for Pontefract\'s role in the Magna Carta

A special tapestry was unveiled in Pontefract as people came from far and wide to take part in week long events to celebrate 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta.

At the final formal dinner on June 12,  the West Yorkshire High Sheriff Ed Anderson, pictured here. unveiled the special quilted piece which was then taken to St Giles’s Pontefract for the service in the Buttercross on Sunday led by the Bishop of Wakefield and former Bishop of Pontefract, the Rt Revd Tony Robinson.

 

The tapestry was stitched by the Ackworth and East Hardwick Embroidery Guild and designed by Emma Horsfield a member of the Magna Carta Group. emmahorsfieldart@gmail.com

 

Pontefract was at the centre of celebrations and events to mark 800 years of the Magna Carta - the Lord of Pontefract Castle, John De Lacy Baron of Pontefract, was one of the twenty-five Barons who forced King John to agree the Charter in June 121.

 

And the week long events included an evening race meeting, a secondary school competition to design and build catapults and earliery this year they were presented with a facsimile copy of the Magna Carta which will now go on a touring exhibition round the town and surrounding areas.
