VILLAGERS will collect building bricks along the route of a sponsored walk and together build a classroom to raise funds to build a real school room to help turn around the lives of orphans in Uganda.
The five mile walk will start and finish at St Bartholomew’s Parish Hall and will take in the local schools in Meltham and Helme and organisers hope to raise the thousands needed for the Meltham Churches Together Mustard Seed Project to build the extra nursery classroom for the children in Kyema, Uganda.
There are currently 38 children in the project – four students are at College or University with three more awaiting placement depending on exam results. Others are secondary, primary students and preschool children.
Since 1996 24 young adults have progressed through the Mustard Seed Project. Only 5 are still seeking employment. We have a senior secretary in the Ugandan Government, an accountant, teachers, educational assistants, environment officers, a nurse, tax officers, plumbers, and some in environment and forestry management.
Meltham Mustard Seed, the charity set up by Meltham Churches Together in 1987 now helps raise and educate orphans in Kyema. Children are placed with foster parents, whilst the charity funds their welfare, medical and educational needs.
It was inspired by the late John Bakanoba who made his home in Meltham and encouraged people in the village to help fund a water borehole in Kyema - over the years the emphasis has shifted to helping change around the lives of orphans.
