The Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Revd Nick Baines, has led a special service to mark 12 months of 150th anniversary celebrations at St Thomas's Church in Sutton.
Guests at the afternoon service on the fourth Sunday in Advent included descendants of Thomas Bairstow, the millowner whose generosity led to the building of the church.
Children from local primary schools buried time capsules imitating the placing of a bottle in the foundations of the church as it was being built and which contains ‘a newspaper and coin of the realm’.
In honour of the occasion, the church was decorated with trees provided by local organisations and businesses and new aerial photos of the church were taken.
The Rev Helen Collings, vicar at St Thomas’s, said: “This was an amazing opportunity to celebrate the last 150 years in the life of the church and its service to the community, and to look forward to the future.”
