Swedish Bishop made Honorary Canon of Wakefield Cathedral

Wakefield Cathedral has welcomed Swedish Bishop Ake Bonnier and Bishop of Ripon, Helen-Ann Hartley as honorary canons.

Bishop Bonnier is the Bishop of Skara, the oldest diocese in the Church of Sweden and which is also linked to the Diocese of Leeds.

He was installed as an ecumenical honorary canon and Bishop Helen-Ann has now been installed as an honorary canon in each of the diocese's three cathedrals.

In his address, Bishop Nick said how Christians were called to be "a defiant people", adding: "We expect you to be defiant canons - but not defiant to me or to the Queen, of course."

He said how he first met Bishop Bonnier, pictured far left, in Skara at a celebration of that diocese's 1,000 year history.

They met again last year at a residential conference held for all seven Diocese of Leeds link bishops at Parcevall Hall last year, pictured right.

"I'm delighted that Ake Bonnier has agreed to be installed here at Wakefield as this will help further develop the link between our dioceses," Bishop Nick said.
