A one woman comedy show exploring the relationship between religion and low self-esteem is to be the unusual opening for a unique day conference for churches, exploring Mental Health issues, which takes place in Bradford next month.
‘Mind Your Head’, written and performed by Eva McIntyre (pictured) will provide a provocative talking point at the start of the conference, “Mental Health begins with Me” which organisers describe as an opportunity to increase awareness of mental health in a church context. It takes place at the Thornbury Centre, Bradford, on Saturday October 18th from 10am – 4pm.
Eva McIntyre (pictured) is an actor, author, storyteller and Worcestershire vicar, and says that despite the subject matter her play will also make people laugh. “Faith and spiritual practices are intended to be life-enhancing yet the human tendency towards self doubt and fear have led us to use religion as a stick to beat ourselves with, and to control others by.
“That doesn’t make it sound like a comedy” says Eva, “But it is. There is something inherently funny about seeing your own tendencies and peculiarities depicted under a spotlight. And there is something very liberating about their exposure, particularly when it becomes clear that you’re not alone.”
Those taking part in the conference will have the chance to quiz the author and performer in a lively question and answer session. The conference will also include afternoon workshops on mental health issues, a national briefing on mental health issues, and a celebration of Holy Communion.
