Unique musical art work at Wakefield Cathedral as part of new festival

A unique musical installation that resonates with Wakefield Cathedral’s beautiful interior will feature as part of the first Yorkshire Sculpture International arts festival.

Wakefield Cathedral is getting ready to be part of the inaugural event, called YSI 2019, new piece of work specially designed for its space.

Beirut composer and sound artist, Tarek Atoui has created an organ as part of the Shuffle Orchestra – a series of performances in which the artist activates instruments newly made that then become part of an art installation that explores and illuminates the architectural space in which it is located.

Wakefield Cathedral will host Tarek Atoui’s Shuffle Orchestra on Saturday, July 20 from 6pm to 8pm

The Dean of Wakefield, the Very Revd Simon Cowling said: “As one of the most instantly recognisable and significant buildings in West Yorkshire, Wakefield Cathedral is delighted to be a venue for the Yorkshire Sculpture International.

“Tarek Atoui’s Shuffle Orchestra promises to be a wonderfully creative celebration of sound in a building whose acoustic subtlety will enable it to be experienced to the full.”

Throughout the 100 day festival there will be new exhibitions, a range of special events, performances, talks and tours spread across four galleries in the two cities of Wakefield and Leeds as well as in the open air.

The YSI 2019 is the first of its kind in the country.

Special events are taking place throughout the opening weekend of the festival on Saturday 22 and Sunday, 23 June in Leeds and Wakefield including introductory curator tours at The Hepworth and Yorkshire Sculpture Park and a street party in Wakefield City Centre on Sunday from 1pm.

Free guide books are available at Wakefield Cathedral's Visitor Information Points in the Treacy Hall.
