The run of success enjoyed by the Diocese of Leeds cricket team finally came to an end last week in the semi-finals of the Church Times Cricket Cup.
The Yorkshire team travelled to Long Whatton Cricket Club, Loughborough to face the Diocese of London, cup holders and victors for the past four years. Leeds were defeated by London in last year’s final, but hopes were high after a run of success, reaching the semi-final after coming top in the region and quarter-final success against a combined Diocese of Norwich and Ely eleven.
After putting London into bat, Leeds made a good start, with Buttanshaw taking two early wickets. However, London fought back with some good batting, ending on 217 for 6.
Leeds, coming in to bat, responded with a good start, reaching 100 runs for the loss of 2 wickets with Groenweld ( 37) and Earnshaw ( 33) leading the way. In the end thoigh, London’s strength came to the fore and Leeds were bowled out for 128.
Rev Phil Arnold : ‘It was a disappointing end to a good season, but a semi- final defeat to the team who have won four years in a row is no mean feat.’
London now march on to the final in September final where they will will face the Diocese of Lichfield eleven who knocked out Rochester Diocese in their semi-final.
