Village shows true grit as churchyard gets a facelift

Work at Long PrestonThe grounds of Long Preston Church, near Skipton in North Yorkshire, have had a makeover thanks to a team of volunteers who helped to lay tons of new gravel on the paths around the churchyard.

The paths at St. Mary’s Church linking the different parts of the churchyard were tired and uneven and in need of a fresh layer of gravel. With support from local businesses and volunteers, gravel that had been generously donated was transported to the churchyard thanks to locals with tractors and trailers, and distributed around the old paths thanks to an army of helpers and their wheelbarrows.

The stone was specially chosen to match the exiting gravel used in the churchyard and everyone was impressed with the number of people who had turned out to help, and the professional job they did.

The Rev’d Stuart Stobart, vicar of Long Preston said “everyone had done a fantastic job, the support from the village has been overwhelming.”  He added “We now have paths that are even and look wonderful. They will continue to be enjoyed by the many locals and visitors who pass through the churchyard on a daily basis.” He thanked Tim Palmer for coordinating the work and liaising with all those who had contributed to the project.

Both Tim and Stuart said a particular thanks to John McGregor of Hanson Quarries for  the hardcore, Long Preston Heritage Group, MSN Construction Ltd, Alan Metcalf Ltd, Richard Rushton, EJ Ward, Colin Ward, Marsden AES Ltd and Dinsdale Moorland Specialists for giving materials and equipment.
