Villagers open their gardens for church funds

Villagers are opening their gardens in Cawthorne for the tenth open gardens event which has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the mission and maintenance of the village church, All Saints.

The biannual Cawthorne Open Gardens event is back in full bloom on the 27th and 28th June this year and organisers are hoping to repeat the success of 2013

Villagers first opened their gardens in 1997 when some 500 visitors turned up – the last one in 2013 brought 1,500 people into the historic south Yorkshire village just outside Barnsley who met the gardeners, strolled around, enjoyed homemade refreshments, cream teas and Pimms.

Every garden is different and each owneris proud to show visitors around. Local businesses and households will also join in the and there will be children's trails and competitions to keep them occupied.

For the music lovers, invited organists will be performing organ recitals in Cawthorne church throughout the two days between 11:00am and 4:00pm.

Entry programmes to all the gardens will be available from village shops, Cawthorne Garden Centre, the Village Green or at any of the Open Gardens which will be well signposted.

Said one of the organisers, John Walker: "Money raised is for the maintenance and mission of All Saints and this event will be our main fund raising event this year.

"It's lovely to see so many people involved - it is a real village effort involving businesses and people who support the church but who are not necessarily regular attenders," he said.

The Gardens open 11.00 to 5.00 Saturday and Sunday 27th and 28th June.

Admission price to all gardens… £5.00 per adult.  Children free.
