Who is God? "Ask Alexa" service launched by Church of England

The Church of England has launched a new service which gives worshippers and those seeking church and biiblical information the chance to use voice-activated virtual assistants.

People can now ask Amazon's Alexa device "Who is God?" or ask it to say a prayer of the day, recite the Ten Commandments or give information on church locations linked to A Church Near You.

There are 30 possible questions at this stage and the move is part of an online campaign to boost tthe CoE's digital presence in everyday life.

It is planned to offer the service through Google Play and other platforms in the future.

The Archbishop of York, said the service would “enable regular churchgoers and those exploring faith to connect with God in another way at a time that’s right for them. A quarter of UK households now own a smart device and … this fast-growing area was identified as a priority for development.”

Adrian Harris, the C of E’s head of digital at Church House, London, said: “Platforms such as Alexa give the church the ability to connect people with God and to weave faith into daily lives, whether for daily prayers or exploring Christianity.”
