“Our churches are great at working with younger children; the problems seem to begin as our children get older. Often they lose interest, disappear and fail to develop deep faith.”
More than 150 people from across the diocese and beyond gathered in Immanuel College in Bradford on Saturday 25th March, to explore ways of growing the church’s ministry with young people.
“Youth work across the country is in urgent need of growth” was the message from the Bishop’s Adviser for Church growth, Canon Robin Gamble. “Many children attend church or other related groups when they are younger, such as Sunday School, uniformed groups, or parent and toddlers – but as they get older, so often they drift away, distracted by things which can draw them away from faith.”
However, the Ignite team, including Robin Gamble, Liz Morton, Children, Young people and Families team leader, Canon Sam Corley of Leeds Minster, and Sammi Tooze a member of the Church Growth team, led sessions focusing on ways to turn around the situation found in many churches.
Youth leaders, Tim Roberts, Adele Regan and Andy Milne gave insights from their own experience.
The day, which was structured with a variety of talks, discussion groups, and worship led by young people, included space for participants to share ideas, discuss the current situation of youth ministry in churches, and be challenged and equipped to develop it.
“Young people’s ministry is not just an add-on; it is a vital part of church and our future.”
