Huddersfield Mission brings people together to help tackle poverty

How we can tackle poverty in the Huddersfield area was the subject of an event run by Huddersfield Mission.

"Poverty Matters" brought together voluntary groups and partners, as well as Harpreet Uppal MP; the Revd Kerry Tankard, Chair of District for the Methodist Church; and the Rt Revd Smitha Prasadam, Bishop of Huddersfield, to hear lived experiences of rural and urban poverty in Huddersfield and seek ways for structural change.

It was also a way of highlighting simple ways to act for change by joining community groups, becoming a trustee or buying a meal voucher.

Bishop Smitha said: "Poverty is not an economic issue, but a spiritual challenge.

“We serve a God, who was born in poverty, became a refugee and championed people on the margins.

“Whether it is ending food and fuel poverty, supporting fairer housing, or better transport in rural areas, awesome, simply being in our communities, this is Kingdom work with gospel heart."

In attendance at the event were Welcome Centre, Fusion Housing, Fresh Futures, Denby Dale Centre, Kirklees Citizens Advice and Law Centre, Paddock Community Trust, Jubilee Centre, Uniform Exchange, Dalton Together, Bradford Credit Union and the Women’s Centre.
