The Archdeacon of Halifax, the Ven Dr Anne Dawtry, was among the first wave of women to be ordained as priests and last weekend, July 1, she celebrated the 25th anniversary of her ordination at a special Evensong service in Halifax Minster.
The service was attended by around 200 people. That in itself is "testimony to the affection in which Archdeacon Anne is held" said the Revd Canon Hilary Barber, vicar of Halifax Minster.
In her sermon, Archdeacon Anne talked about the different forms of calling for each person. She reminded the congregation that a vocation does not just mean a calling to ordination or licensed lay ministry. The vocations of church wardens, parish secertaries, treasurers are just as important. It was important that each person continually listens for the call of God, she said.
The Rt Revd Jonathan Gibbs, Bishop of Huddersfield also paid tribute to Archdeacon Anne, describing her as a valued disciple and friend.
