On the Seventh Day... Bishop Nick kickstarts the Bible reading marathon

And on the Seventh Day, our Diocesan Bishop, Bishop Nick kickstarted the non-stop bible reading marathon at St Mary's Church, Gomersal.

After preaching the morning service on Sunday 14 September, Bishop Nick just had time for a quick cup of coffee before he was led to the small chapel where the Bible marathon will take place. The event called from Alpha to Omega has been organised by church-goer, Trees Fewster who hopes it will raise people's awareness of the Holy Bible in its entirety. The marathon will continue  through the nights with readers each having chosen their 15 minute slot until the last word – expected 84 hours later - sometime during the night of Wed 17 September.

The organiser, Trees Fewster, said: “I am extremely pleased with how it has all come together and I sincerely hope that when we finish, it will not be the end, but that, between us, we might have created a renewed interest in the Bible.”

The event is taking place under the guidance of St Mary’s vicar, the Revd Karen Nicholl, and alongside Bishop Nick, Bishop Tony Robinson of the Wakefield Area has agreed to do a slot, as has Paul Blakeley, MBE, the founder of the Street Angels project, members of the Mothers’ Union, volunteers from as far as Todmorden and Warley, and more closely from Birkenshaw, Scholes and East Ardsley plus three local councillors, Coun Andrew Palfryman, a former mayor and deputy mayor of Kirklees Coun Simon Alvy, local Labour councillor for Liversedge and Gomersal, and Baroness Pinnock, Liberal Democrat councillor for Cleckheaton.

Trees is still looking for last minute readers and would be grateful for extra welcomers.

SIGN UP at mfewster.41@brinternet.com or call her on 01274 873485 or pop into the church on Spen Lane, between Cleckheaton and Gomersal. It will be lit by torch light at night for safety.
