Sunshine for peace walk
The sun shone on the walkers who marked the 100th anniversary of the day Britain entered the First World War with a peace walk.
Young and old from the villages of Shelley and Shepley gathered at the war memorial at the lych gate at Emmanuel Shelley on Monday to remember the 93 men who died in WW1 from the two Huddersfield villages and to reflect on all those caught up in conflicts today.
They were joined by their MP, Simon Revell who opened a bridge that now gives villagers and visitors easy access to the Shepley War Memorial following a successful campaign by the Shepley Conservation Group.
The group met at Shelley and held a short service at the war memorial, read out all the names written there before walking together to the Shepley war memorial to do the same again before a picnic lunch together.
The vicar, the Revd Canon Joyce Jones said: “We just held short services at the memorials and we read out an extract from a soldier’s letter from the front and then read all the names on the memorials.
“All ages were represented and everyone said what a positive thing it was for us to do together, ” she added.
Shelley lost 40 men and Shepley lost 53 in the First World War.
