During these difficult times we still need to support our sisters and brothers in Christ around the world, something the Diocese of Leeds Tanzania Link Committee has been doing.
The committee, which manages our link with the dioceses of Mara, Rorya and Tarime in Tanzania, have looked to improve awareness of COVID-19, and promote preventative measures in churches and schools.
Funds have been provided for buckets and soap so people could wash hands before entering churches for worship, and, most recently, the diocese has been able to fund some COVID-19 support training for clergy and diocesan staff in Tarime Diocese.
The Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Revd Tony Robinson, said: “Since April 2020 the Government of Tanzania have refused to produce any statistics about the spread of COVID-19.
“However, the new President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, the first woman in the country to hold the office, was recently installed following the death of the previous President.
“She has said it is “not proper to ignore” the coronavirus pandemic, in comments suggesting a shift from her COVID-sceptic predecessor.
“We have feared for our brothers and sisters and want to help them to become more aware of the dangers of COVID-19 and try to take preventative measures.”
