Walking together for peace

Shelley War memorial lych gate A community walk around the villages of Shelley and Shepley has been organized for August 4 to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 and the last day of peace.

Organised by the Churches Together Group, the 3-mile walk will start with a short service at the lych gate at Emmanuel Shelley at 11.30am (Shelley War Memorial) and take an easy route into Shepley. It is suitable for old and young and there’s a pavement route for buggies.

People should bring their own picnics to eat in Shepley Methodist Church Orchard – or inside the church if wet – before walking up to the Shepley Memorial for another short ceremony.

Both churches hope to mount displays to remember their local war heroes and refreshments are available.

Priest in charge of Emmanuel Shelley and St Paul’s Shepley, the Revd Joyce Jones said: “Anyone is welcome to join us at any part of the walk. They can join us for the picnic, or either of the ceremonies.

“We just want as many as possible of us to come together to commemorate what would have been the last day of peace before the outbreak of the First World War,” she said.
